This is a family near and dear to my heart. The Matriarch of the family has had me photograph all of her grand babies, just at or around their first birthday. This is a special little guy because he not only was a rainbow baby, but also had a hard start into the world. But he is healthy and strong and loved by so many people. This truly is a blessed family. For the last few years we have gone to Anchorage so we have a similar look, in fact this family has repeated the bridge photo with each child. I love things like that.
Not until recently did I know I was a rainbow baby. There wasn’t a universal name for when a baby is lost early and another baby follows, that would not exist otherwise. As a child I knew our family story well. My mom had delivered a still born, her baby died just past six months. It was tragic and painful. That was her second and to be last child, I also have an older brother. I knew I would not be here if that child had not died. It was a confusing feeling as a child. I was loved and felt like a gift, but there was a hole in the family that I didn’t quite understand at the time. As a mother, I now understand the pain from such a loss and also the gift of the living child.
This family chose to remember their lost child with a ceramic bird. It was a beautiful thing to see the children interact with something tangible. You could see the transference of love from both of the older children, who are also sweeties. As is the baby, what a smile!
Hugs to all the families out there who experience such loss. May this families strength bring some comfort.
Oh and did I tell you this was a winter session! I know it is not over yet but we have had a fairly mild winter, minus the subfreezing weather over the holidays. I am even seeing buds on some bushes.
